![]() The existing TIDE LRT was always envisioned as a starter line, destined to be expanded throughout the Hampton Roads area. And hopefully this is a starting point for the line to get up to the Naval Base. Directly serving both a hospital and a mixed use area with hotels would provide a year-round source of ridership. Instead it would be a more circuitous route that continues the line beyond its current Newtown Road endpoint on the border of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. ![]() It was assumed that The TIDE would have gone right up Military Highway from the station of the same name (located approximately where the point of the blue arrow is) to the redeveloped mall area at Military Circle. The map helps one to better understand the route. Hampton Roads Transit presented its vision for the expansion of The Tide - Norfolkâs light rail system - to city councilmembers at a retreat Friday. HRT presents vision for Norfolk light rail extension Hampton Roads Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, VA, 3/4/22: My fear is that this too gets studied to death for two years and eventually goes the way of the others. It's more likely the two routes would interline between the Military Highway station and downtown, with the less possible alternative (and one they might adopt during off peak hours) being a shuttle service with forced change of trains at that station. How they hook it into the original system could be interesting - given that the starter system makes a stop at Military Highway already. Sure there's a shopping mall en route, and they say that this too could eventually work its way to the Naval Base. Now a new consolation prize is raised, a line up Military Highway. Back to the western extension to the Naval Base, I figured this one had a better chance given the year-round nature of the potential ridership. ![]() Although Virginia Beach is more than just the beach in fact it's a rather large city in area in its own right. While I had felt that light rail to the Waterfront was a no-brainer, I suppose a major factor working against that is the seasonal nature of a beach resort. ![]() I was hopeful for this, and now it's the second failure in as many years, with the first being the No-Go on the Virginia Beach extension. ![]()
